In the Bundesliga last season, Niclas Füllkrug and Christopher Nkunku shared the top scorer, with both scoring 16 goals each after 34 rounds. In FC Bayern Munich’s 4-2 home victory over 1. FC Heidenheim last weekend, Harry Kane scored his 16th and 17th goals of the season, after just eleven matchdays. He himself was not even aware of this fact.
“Some people told me there were 16 goals last year,” Kane said after the game. “17 goals at this moment is unbelievable, I’m proud to have started like this.” But thanks go to the team that gave him the opportunities. “I like playing for this team. We created a lot of opportunities.”

In all competitions, Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing now has 21 goals and seven assists. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund was quick to describe the Englishman as a “phenomenon” and German international record holder Lothar Matthäus also praised Kane.
Lothar Matthäus: Lewandowski’s record in danger
“We always talk about goals – I’m talking about the person Harry Kane.”said Matthäus on the “Sky90” talk show. “The goals are wonderful for Bayern Munich and for him personally.”
Matthäus also now sees the Bundesliga record of 41 goals in a season, set by Robert Lewandowski in the 2020/2021 season, in danger. “He can score 45 goals with the support he has in the team”predicted the former Bayern player.

Harry Kane joined from Tottenham Hotspur for €95 million last summer after a never-ending transfer saga. For Matthäus, a price that is justified in retrospect: “He came here with experience, he is no longer a young player. He is captain of the England team and a personality. That’s what you bought.”
Matthäus with hidden criticism of Robert Lewandowski
After Robert Lewandowski left FC Barcelona in the summer of 2022, FC Bayern had been looking for a successor for a long time. Sadio Mané was signed by Liverpool FC as a supposed replacement, but he never performed as expected and left Munich for Saudi Arabia after just one year.
Lothar Matthäus believes Harry Kane is not just the desired replacement for Lewandowski, but even more so. “He is not just a goalscorer, he is also a leader”said the 62-year-old and added: “He’s more of a leader than Robert Lewandowski because he takes responsibility, gives interviews, takes selfies. Bayern needed a guy like that.”

Following this, a scene of Robert Lewandowski went viral over the weekend in which he refused to shake hands with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal in the game against Alavés. Shortly afterwards, Lewandowski reprimanded him when he made what he considered a wrong decision in one scene.
There later appeared to be a reconciliation between the two, but such a scene seems difficult to imagine with Harry Kane.
Thomas Tuchel declined to add more on Tuesday afternoon. Three days after the now legendary blow against television experts Lothar Matthäus and Didi Hamann, following FC Bayern’s magnificent 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund, the coach’s performance overshadowed his team’s performance.
