To divide

Is a well-known baking giant taking money out of its customers’ pockets with the cup trick? At least that’s what one customer claims in a video. The bakery responds.

Munich – For many people, a trip to the bakery in the early hours of the morning is part of their daily routine. After all, drinking as much coffee as possible should quickly give your body the energy it needs before work. But rumors continue to circulate online warning about the cup trick.

A large Bavarian bakery would also be cheating on cup sizes and thus taking money out of its customers’ pockets every day. At least that’s what a Facebook user from Munich says, who now registers his discontent in a video message.

Via video: Man complains about the size of his coffee

Two cups are in the foreground in the Munich video – one small and one large. The “Ihle” brand is unmistakably stamped on the paper cups in large white letters on a red background. For more than 125 years, the Swabian rural bakery has been offering its customers not only sweet and savory snacks, but also drinks, according to the company’s own website.

But at first glance it’s clear: the large cup filled with latte macchiato is only three-quarters full. The creator of the video message therefore feels uncomfortable just looking at it. “That’s what they call a big one,” he says sarcastically as he slowly pours the contents of the large cup into the smaller one.

“The big one fits 100% into the small one”, the user can be heard prophesying during the campaign. And indeed: the cup is full. Does this mean: same content at different prices?

“This is a complete fraud,” comments the video creator in his post. The apparently scammed person receives a lot of support from the Facebook community. “This is more than bullshit,” he says several times in the comments.

Large bakery responds to accusations

However, the accusation does not go unnoticed by the baking giant Ihle. When questioned by the editorial team, the chain gave a long explanation to justify the choice of cup size. Thus, there are two cup sizes in the branches for coffee, latte and cappuccino – but not for latte macchiato.

“We only offer latte macchiato in one size. Both at the cafe and to go. Here the glass with around 330 ml is our measurement. This is between the regular 250 ml glass and the large 400 ml glass. There is only one prize in the competition”, explains a spokesperson for the country bakery. The price of a standard macchiato is around 3.40 euros.

Middle: Since, as in this case, the latte macchiato is served in a 0.4 liter glass, the paper cup should not be filled to the top. This means the contents also fit into the next smaller packaging size. “This was a compromise we had to make over many years to not have to list too many packaging items.”

After customer complaint about coffee size: bakery checks

However, Ihle does not want to completely rule out the possibility of an accident. “A malfunction, a running out of milk container or an inattentive employee” are also fundamentally possible. The network now wants to analyze the complaint.

“Clear communication and consistent products are always very important to us. “I also apologize if a mistake was made”, the bakery writes to us in conclusion. A small consolation for the stunned bakery visitor.
